Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. (Albert Einstein)

Dear Parents and Community Members:
As the new principal of Lake Village Elementary School, I want to welcome you back to school. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to work with the highly qualified and dedicated staff, the wonderful students, and the supportive parents of this community.
Our school is committed to creating an environment in which students believe in themselves and reach for goals that will enable them to become productive members of our society. We are dedicated to providing an environment that encourages parent and peer support, responsibility, improvement of academic and personal skills, decision making skills, equality and education as a life-long process. We are dedicated to the children and our bottom line must always be: what is best for the students?
Lake Village School has a strong history of passing the Indiana State testing. Although we do not have the results from last year’s testing, Lake
Village School has surpassed the requirements for the past six years! Our staff is committed to working with students and their families as a team. The rigorous curriculum is directly aligned to the Common Core and State Standards. To help each child achieve his or her fullest potential, the school provides both enrichment and intervention supports for students. We believe in knowing each child by “name and need.”
We are in the beginning phases of creating a Positive Behavior and Intervention Support (PBIS) system for our school. This system looks at the student as a whole and clearly defines areas of need. While we have been diligently working on the academic portion, we will add the social and behavioral portions yet this year. It is my hope that we will be ready to introduce them to the students by second semester.
As principal here, I am the lead learner and I intend to be a leader of learning! We are preparing students for jobs and technologies that don’t yet exist in order to solve problems we don’t even know are problems yet. To do this, we have to be able to learn, unlearn, and learn again. It is my goal to help students develop a passion for life-long learning. Throughout my career as a learner, I discovered that I learn best by seeing an example. I am a visual learner. What is your child’s learning style?
I come from a family of educators: my mother and father are both retired school teachers; my paternal grandmother was also a teacher; my sister, the youngest of my three siblings, is a teacher in Kentucky, she and her husband have my youngest niece and nephew; my youngest brother is a doctoral student in Oregon; my oldest brother is a manager at Eli Lilly in Indianapolis, he and his wife have my oldest niece and nephew; I am the oldest
and it is my goal to complete my doctorate this year. My youngest brother and I are seeing who can complete their doctorate first! This summer I took three short weekend vacations. I went to Corydon, IN for my family “Run-Away.” This is an annual tradition. We always take the family photo from the back (our best side). I went to New Buffalo, MI and enjoyed the beach and shops there! I also attended my paternal “Cousin Reunion”out in Montana this year where we hiked parts of Glacier National Park, west gate near Logan’s Pass! Family time is precious and I encourage you all to
spend time with your families.
I hope your children did their reading over the summer! It is so important to always have a book in hand. Some of my summer reading included: Teaching with Love & Logic,The Bully, The Bullied, and The Bystander,Learning to Listen, You Can’t Make Me, but I Can be Persuaded,Pyramid Response to Intervention, The Litigator, The Incredible 5 Point Scale, and The Unwritten Rules of Social Relationships. Although these are not all leisure reads, they are all important in what I do as an educator. Read, Read, Read!
I fully embrace the mission of PRIDE (Parent & Peer Support, Responsibility, Improvement of Academic and Personal Skills, Decision making skills, Equality and Education as a life-long process). I have been a life-long learner and it is my desire to share that enthusiasm with your children. Research shows that parental involvement in a child’s education benefits the child. These benefits are higher levels of academic achievement,
positive attitudes, and greater maturity and responsibility. Because the benefits are so solid, I urge you to take part as much as possible in the life
of our school. It does take an entire village (Lake Village) to raise a child.
Educationally yours,
Ms. Joan Seager
